Carpet vs Hardwood Flooring, Which to choose?

When it comes to flooring there are endless choices for today’s home owner. Whether it comes to colors, textures or even grout lines and moldings, the amount of choices there are out there can be very overwhelming. We would like to put things in perspective for you and make that choice less daunting.

Carpets Vs Hardwood Floors

Wood is Easy to Clean

When dealing with carpet, you have to evaluate what kind of stain it is, what kind of cleaning solution would be best for that particular stain and still make sure you’re not using something that could be harmful to the carpet. Not so with wood floors. Wood floors don’t absorb a stain like carpet does, so you can usually just wipe up the mess with something damp to clean it up and move on with your life. Hard wood floors are a great option for people with small children or pets.

Carpet can Minimize Slips and Falls

If you are accident prone, have fragile bones or are elderly, carpets may be a better fit for your life. The cushions provide a softer padding if you fall. Also, the rough texture of carpet makes it less likely you will fall in the first place.

Wood is Timeless

While you may regret that lime green carpet you chose for the baby’s room, it’s less likely you’ll get tired of a classic wood floor. A timeless, wood-toned gleam will never go out of style. All you need is a good protective coating and regular tender, loving, care, and your wood floors will be beautiful for years and years to come.

Carpet is Less Expensive

Because wood is a natural resource, and since it is experiencing a surge in popularity, it is a more costly investment. According to a study cited by the Carpet and Rug Institute, a survey of commercial buildings that had maintenance programs for hard surfaces and carpet showed that carpet cost less to maintain.

Wood Lasts Longer

Carpet can fade, stain and generally look run down. However, with proper care, wood can look pretty much the same forever. According the the National Association of Home Builders, wood floors can last hundreds of years, so they don’t need to be replaced as often as other flooring options.

Carpet Can Improve Air Quality

Gravity can pull household particles like dust, pollen and dander to the floor. Carpet fibers trap the particles, meaning they stay there and not in your nose and lungs. Get rid of them for good by using a quality vacuum on a regular basis.
